HCAC 2022 Men’s Soccer Notebook, Week 9

CARMEL, Ind. – The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) men’s soccer teams competed in week nine of the 2022 season.

Athletes of the Week:
Offensive Athlete of the Week:
Michael Abel (Cincinnati, Ohio) Mount St. Joseph University | Forward | Junior - Abel led the Lions past Defiance in their last game of the season. Abel scored a pair of goals including a game-winning header in the 88th minute.
Defensive Athlete of the Week:
Luciano Salemi (Indianapolis, Ind.) Hanover College | Goalkeeper | Junior - Salemi led the Panthers in a 0-0 draw with Rose-Hulman. The junior keeper played an impressive game in frame charting a game-high seven saves including a one handed point blank save.
 
Notable Performances:
  • Drew Vaughn (Beavercreek, Ohio) Anderson University | Defense | Junior - Vaughn recorded two steals and three intercepts in Anderson's 2-1 victory against Earlham.
  • Stephen Fite (Cincinnati, Ohio) Anderson University | Midfield | Junior - Fite scored the game-winning goal in Anderson's 2-1 victory against Earlham on Wednesday.
  • Benjamin Davidson (Greenville, Ohio) Bluffton University | Forward | Senior - Davidson did the damage with his second and third goals of the season, leading Bluffton a 3-1 win over Manchester in the regular-season finale on Tuesday while helping the Beavers clinch their first-ever HCAC tournament hosting opportunity.
  • Angel Velasco-Urbina (Louisville, Ky.) Bluffton University | Goalkeeper | Sophomore - Velasco-Urbina finished with one save as the Beavers controlled much of the action in a 3-1 win over Manchester on Tuesday.
  • Chase Stiner (St. Joseph, Ill.) Defiance College | Midfield | Senior - Stiner closed his career at Defiance with three scores in his final three games, including a score on a penalty kick in Wednesday's defeat at Mount St Joseph. He also led Defiance in shots (six) and shots on goal (four).
  • Ian Rowe (Greenwood, Ind.) Franklin College | Goalkeeper | Junior - Tallied seven saves for the Griz on Wednesday night in a scoreless draw with Transylvania, picking up his first clean sheet of the year.
  • Coghlin Kumler (Indianapolis, Ind.) Hanover College | Midfield | Senior - Kumler led the Panthers in a 0-0 draw with Rose-Hulman tying a team-high three shots, two of which landed on frame.
  • Michael Trinh (Fairfax, Va.) Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology | Goalkeeper | Sophomore – Trinh recorded five saves in a scoreless draw at Hanover that secured Rose-Hulman the No. 1 seed in the HCAC Tournament and its fourth consecutive HCAC regular season championship.
  • Trent Fry (Cynthiana, Ky.) Transylvania University | Goalkeeper | Sophomore - Fry had seven saves against Franklin in their 0-0 draw posting a clean sheet.
