HCAC 2025 Men's Soccer Notebook, Week 1

CARMEL, Ind. – The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) men’s soccer teams competed in week one of the 2025 season.

Athletes of the Week: 
Offensive Player of the Week:
Cole Varela (Elizabethtown, Ky.) Transylvania University | Forward | Junior - In the season opening victory against Asbury, Cole Varela recorded both a goal and an assist. In a 3-0 road victory against Heidelberg, Varela continued to impress on the offensive side with two goals. With Varela's offensive performance, Transylvania is walking away from opening weekend 2-0.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Justin Burns (Tulsa, Okla.) Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology | Goalkeeper | First Year - Justin Burns had an exceptional weekend to help the Fightin' Engineers start the season at 1-1. In the win over Greenville, Burns totaled three saves and earned the shutout win with a score of 3-0. Against Wilmington, Burns totaled five saves in a strong defensive performance.

Offensive Players:
  • Luke Weinman V (Hobart, Ind.) Anderson University | Defender | Sophomore - Luke Weinman V was named the Offensive MVP of the Raven/Quaker Classic. Weinman V notched 2 goals and 1 assist for 5 points during Saturday's 4-0 win against Beloit. Anderson won the Raven/Quaker Classic for the third year in a row. The Ravens finished 1-1 on the week.
  • Alex Brown (Delaware, Ohio) Bluffton University | Forward | Senior - Brown knocked in a pair of goals at Marietta on Sunday as Bluffton fell just short (4-3) to the Pioneers. He finished the match with three total shots.
  • Rhoi Phulusa (Rockville, Ill.) Earlham College | Forward | Sophomore - Rhoi Phulusa scored the game-winning goal over Muskingum University on Saturday in the final game of the Quaker/Raven Classic. Phulusa tallied six shots on the week.
  • Patricio Campos (Cdmx, Mexico) Hanover College | Forward | Junior - Campos led the Panthers as they posted a 1-0-1 record as part of the Spalding Invite. Campos tallied two goals and an assist for five combined points. He propelled Hanover past Centre, netting both of the Panther goals.
  • Chris Wilson (Indianapolis, Ind.) Manchester University | Forward | Junior - Wilson scored the lone goal for the Spartans this past weekend on 1 shot attempt.
  • Aidan Sweeney (Springboro, Ohio) Mount St. Joseph University | Defender | First Year - Freshman defender Aidan Sweeney scored the 81st minute equalizer for the Lions in their 2-2 season opening effort vs. Wilmington. On a Lions corner kick Sweeney was able to head the ball into the back of the net for his first career goal.
  • William Wittich (Solon, Iowa) Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology | Defender | Senior - William Wittich was a key contributor for the Fightin' Engineers, as they went 1-1 over the weekend to start the season. Wittich finished the weekend with 131 minutes, totaling one goal and three shots across the two matches. His goal came at the end of the match against Greenville to secure the win with a score of 3-0.
Defensive Players:
  • Emmett Kindler (Oak Park, Ill.) Anderson University | Defender | Junior - Emmett Kindler was named to the Raven/Quaker Classic All-Tournament Team. Kindler moved from midfield to the defensive line after a starting defender got injured during the game. He then contributed to shutting out Beloit 4-0 for the remaining 88 minutes. Anderson won the third consecutive Raven/Quaker Classic. The Ravens went 1-1 on the week.
  • Ryland Wamsley (Beavercreek, Ohio) Earlham College | Goalkeeper | Sophomore - Sophomore Ryland Wamsley kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Muskingum on Saturday in the Quaker/Raven Classic. On the week, Wamsley collected eight saves with two goals allowed.
  • Rodrigo Gutierrez Olvera Gonzalez (Cdmx, Mexico) Hanover College | Goalkeeper | Senior - Rodrigo led the Panthers in frame, posting a 1-0-1 overall record. The senior tallied five saves for a .714 save percentage. He also added a shutout as Hanover knocked off Centre 2-0.
  • Will Martin (Goshen, Ind.) Manchester University | Goalkeeper | Sophomore - Will Martin made his first start in goal for the Spartans against Great Lakes Christian. In his first start, Martin posted 4 saves and ended the match with a clean sheet.
