HCAC 2023 Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Notebook, Week 7

CARMEL, Ind. – The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) outdoor track and field teams competed in week seven of the 2023 season.

Athletes of the Week:  

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week:  

Enrique Salazar (Plymouth, Ind.) Manchester University | Senior- Salazar took first in the men's 1,500m in a time of 3:53.70, breaking the Manchester school record previously held by Salazar by .04 seconds. 
 

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week: 

Ben Villafuerte (Angola, Ind.) Manchester University | Senior- Villafuerte set a new PR in the shot put with a mark of 15.89m, putting him second all-time in Manchester school history. 
 

 
Women’s Track Athlete of the Week 

Jada Stansberry (Alexandria, Ind.) Anderson University | First Year- Stansberry clocked a 400-meter dash time of 57.06 seconds to capture third place in the Fighting Chance Meet. Stansberry missed her school record by 0.06 seconds. 
 

Women’s Field Athlete of the Week: 

Carley Camp (Logansport, Ind.) Manchester University | Sophomore- Camp took second place in shot put at the Grand Valley State Last Chance Meet. Camp finished the meet with a mark of 13.83m, breaking the Manchester school record previously held by Camp. 

 
 

Notable Performances:  

Men’s  

  • Robert Hoegeman (Monroe, Ohio.) Hanover College | Senior- Hoegeman led the Panthers as part of the Fighting Chance Invite where he ran a competitive 1,500 meter race. The senior finished 18th in a time of 4:12.31. 

  • Conner Kimball (West Valley City, Utah.) Earlham College | Senior- Kimball broke his own school record in the 800 meter run at the Carius-Gregory Invitational hosted by North Central with a time of 1:53.2.  

  • Desmond Gist (Detroit, Mich.) Bluffton University | First Year- Kicking off the Baldwin Wallace Last Chance Meet with a school-record 14.33 in the 110-meter hurdles was Desmond Gist  who already held the school mark with a 14.46. Gist ran a 14.48, nearly breaking his record in the prelims, then he put the hammer down, resulting in a time that has him 13th in the country. 

  • Michael Sweigart (Alexandria, Ind.) Anderson University | Sophomore- Sweigart competed in the shot put in three meets last week. During Tuesday's GVSU Last-Chance Meet, Sweigart recorded a distance of 15.76 meters (51 feet, 8.5 inches) in the shot put, finishing seventh in the meet. Sweigart secured sixth place in the shot put with a distance of 15.80 meters (51 feet, 10 inches) during Thursday's Carius-Gregory Invitational. During Saturday's Fighting Chance Meet, Sweigart took fifth in the shot put with a distance of 15.69 meters (51 feet, 5.75 inches). 

  • Kaleb Gucinski (Fishers, Ind.) Anderson University | Senior- Gucinski placed 27th in the college division of the 5,000 with a time of 16 minutes, 0.03 seconds during Friday's Fighting Chance Meet

Women’s 

  • Brooke Bouwens (Lake Odessa, Mich.) Manchester University | Senior- Bouwens turned in strong showing at St. Francis Last Chance Qualifier (Ill.), finishing the 400m hurdles in fifth place with a time of finished the 400m hurdles in fifth place with a time 1:04.29. Bouwens' time is a .50 second PR and ranks third all-time in school history.  

  • Amberleigh Sorensen (Yorktown, Ind.) Hanover College | Junior- Sorensen ran a strong 1,500 meter race as part of the Fighting Chance Invite where she finished third in a time of 4:49.91. 

  • Jessie Stenger (Brookeville,Ind.) Hanover College | Sophomore- Stenger competed as part of the Carius/Gregory Last Chance meet where she claimed third in the shot put with a toss of 13.73 meters. She also took eighth in the discus with a throw of 41.61 meters. The sophomore is set to make her second straight appearance at nationals in the shot put currently ranked 10th in the event.  

  • Amberleigh Sorensen (Yorktown, Ind.) Hanover College | Junior- Sorensen ran a strong 1,500 meter race as part of the Fighting Chance Invite where she finished third in a time of 4:49.91. 

  • Elsa King (Houston, Texas) Rose-Hulman Institute of Technoloy | Junior- King ran the 3rd fastest 5,000-meter time in Rose-Hulman history with a time of 18:47.60 at the St. Francis Invitational.
