FRANKLIN, Ind. - The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) concluded the 2023 Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the campus of Franklin College, at Grizzly Park’s H. Dean Evans Track and Field Complex.
The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Fightin’ Engineers earned the title of 2023 HCAC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Champions scoring a total of 185 points. The Spartans of Manchester University, the defending champions of the HCAC outdoor title finished in second place with a total of 157 points. Followed by the Beavers of Bluffton University who claim third place with a total of 114 points.
The men’s javelin throw opened up the day on the men’s side, which resulted in
Chase Miles of Franklin College becoming the first HCAC champion of the day throwing 46.44 meters.
Michael Sweigart of Anderson won the champion of the men’s hammer throw with a throw of 53.65 meters and also was voted the Men’s Most Outstanding Throws Athlete of the Year.
Justin Dreyling soared to first place in the men’s long jump with a jump of 7.04 meters which earned Dreyling the HCAC title for men’s long jump. Dreyling’s first-place finish played a crucial role for MSJ, becoming the HCAC’s Men’s Most Outstanding Jumps Athlete of the Year.
The men’s 4x100 meter relay was a highly contested race from start to finish but resulted in Rose-Hulman’s team of
Timothy Youndt,
Tyce Miller,
Jack Cox, and
Jailen Hobbs becoming champions of the event. The Fightin’ Engineers posted a time of 41.85 seconds to best the competition.
The men’s 1500 meter run saw two Manchester Spartans finish at the top of the conference.
Enrique Salazar of Manchester became champion of the men’s 1500-meter run posting a blazing time of 4:03.24 followed by teammate
Connor Havens who finished in second place with a time of 4:04.97.
The men’s 110-meter hurdles champion is
Desmond Gist of Bluffton, who paced the field with a 14.88.
The men’s 400 meter dash champion was decided by .23 seconds which led to first-year
Marlon Brown of Defiance College becoming the 400 meter dash champion posting a time of 49.36 seconds.
The men’s 100 meter dash saw the HCAC’s men’s most outstanding sprints/hurdles Athlete of the Year
Jailen Hobbs of Rose-Hulman atop the podium with a time of 10.42 seconds.
The men’s 800 meter run saw
Conner Kimball of Earlham College pace the field blazing his path to the HCAC 800 meter title.
Kimball not only won the men’s 800 meter but set a new HCAC conference record with a time of 1:53.63 seconds.
Desmond Gist of Bluffton found himself at the top of the HCAC podium once again in the men’s 400 meter hurdles with a time of 56.08 seconds, edging out the competition by .89 seconds.
The HCAC’s men’s most outstanding sprints/hurdles athlete of the year
Jailen Hobbs of Rose-Hulman was crowned champion in the men’s 200 meter dash with a time of 21.51 seconds.
Enrique Salazar of Manchester found himself atop the podium again later on day two.
Salazar won the men’s 5000 meter run with a time of 15:14.71, which was nine seconds clear of the competition to become the HCAC’s men’s 5000 meter run champion.
The men’s 4x400 meter relay was the final men’s event of the day, which saw the Beavers of Bluffton finish in first place of the men’s 4x400 meter relay. The team of
Blayden McCoy,
Simon Shawk,
Russel Lough, and
Jayden McConnell posted a time of 3:23.68, which was enough for the HCAC championship.
