HCAC 2023 Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Notebook, Week 3

CARMEL, Ind. – The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Outdoor track and field teams competed in week three of the 2023 season.

Athletes of the Week:  

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week:  

Enrique Salazar (Plymouth, Ind.) Manchester University | Graduate- Salazar posted a conference leading mark in the 1500m run at the Manchester Invitational on Saturday. Salazar finished the race in third place, crossing the finish line in a time of 3:56.54. 

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week: 

Ben Villafuerte (Angola, Ind.) Manchester University | Senior- Villafuerte competed at the Manchester Invitational where he took home 2nd place in the shot put with a mark of 15.78m. This mark is now the conference lead by .65m (2ft 2in). It also was the Manchester #2 All-Time mark and currently ranks #17 in all of Division III for the outdoor Season. He also had a PR of 39.68m in the discus for 4th Place and the #5 mark in the HCAC. 

 
Women’s Track Athlete of the Week: 

Narindwa Semakula (New Brighton, Minn.) Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology | First Year- Semakula won the 100-meter hurdles at Wabash with a time of 14.67 seconds that ranks No. 2 in Rose-Hulman history and No. 26 in NCAA Division III this season. Semakula also placed 2nd in the 4-x-100 relay (50.02) and 4th in the 200 (27.19). 

Women’s Field Athlete of the Week: 

Carley Camp (Logansport, Ind.) Manchester University | Sophomore- Camp competed at the Manchester Invitational scoring 28 of 30 possible points over 3 events. She took home 1st place in the shot put with a mark of 13.01m and the discus with a personal record mark of 38.49m. Camp's shot put mark currently ranks 22nd in all of Division III this outdoor season. She also took home 2nd place in the hammer throw with season best and conference leading mark of 44.43m. 

Notable Performances:  

Men’s  

  • Ja’Quay Janvier (Miami Gardens, Fla.) Defiance College | Senior- Janvier placed 10th in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.18 seconds at Indiana Tech. 

  • Thomas Tullius (Brookston, Ind.) Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology | Sophomore- Tullius placed 5th in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:27.02 to help Rose-Hulman finish 4th as a team at the Wabash Invitational on Saturday. 

  • Conner Watson (Greenwood, Ind.) Hanover College | First Year- Watson led the Panthers as part of the Wabash Invite finding success in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as he took fourth in a time of 10:17.12. 

  • Tim Youndt (Pottstown, Ind.) Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology | Senior- Youndt won the triple jump at Wabash with a career-best outdoor mark of 46' 7 1/4" that ranks No. 4 in Rose-Hulman history and No. 14 in NCAA Division III this season. Youndt also placed 5th in the long jump with a mark of 20' 10". 

  • Nick Stroud (Leavenworth, Ind.) Hanover College | Senior- Stroud led the Panthers as part of the Wabash Invite over the weekend winning the hammer throw. The senior claimed the top spot with a toss of 49.76 meters.  

  • Justin Dreyling (Reading, Ohio.) Mount St. Joseph University | Senior- Dreyling competed for the Lions at the Marv Frye Invitational this weekend. Dreyling was the winner of the Long Jump by a considerable margin jumping 6.93M (22ft 9in). The next closest competitor sat at 6.66M (21 ft 10.25in). Dreyling also helped the Lions earn a 4th Place finish in the 4x100M Relay.  

  • Ron Scott (St. Petersburg, Fla.) Defiance College | Junior- Scott recorded a personal best in the discus throw with a mark of 33.22 meters which surpassed his previous best of 31.79 meters. 
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
     

Women’s 

  • Hannah Brubaker (Goshen, Ind.) Manchester University | Senior- Brubaker won the 1500m run and the 5000m run during the Manchester Invitational on Saturday. Brubaker finished the 1500m run in a time of 5:03.64, which currently ranks second in the HCAC.  

  • Lisa Maria Markau (Berlin, Germany) Defiance College | Senior- Lisa-Maria Markau recorded a new personal best in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.67 seconds. She also placed a team high 8th in the 200-meter dash. 

  • Zaleeya Martin (Shelbyville, Ind.) Hanover College | Senior- Martin led the Panthers at the Wabash Invite turning in a second place finish in the 100-meter dash crossing the finish line in a time of 12.67 seconds. Martin also turned in a runner-up finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.69 seconds. 

  • Taylor Tatlock (Edinburgh, Ind.) Franklin College | Senior- Tatlock earned a pair of top-three finishes at Saturday's Manchester Invitational, winning the javelin with a throw of 36.71m and placing third in the discus with a toss of 37.88m.  

  • Evelyn Utley (Danville, Ind.) Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology | Sophomore- Utely set a Rose-Hulman school record in the shot put (41' 5") to place 2nd individually at Wabash. The mark also stands in the NCAA Division III top 40 this season. Utley also came home 2nd in the javelin (113' 10") and 4th in the discus (114' 2") to help the team placed 3rd in the meet. 

  • Jessica Beckman (Glenwood, Ind.) Hanover College | Senior- Beckman led the Panthers as part of the Wabash Invite winning the discus with a distance of 42.30 meters. Hanover claimed the top three spots in the event.  

  • Jill Wilhelm (St. Leon, Ind.) Mount. St. Joseph University | First Year- Wilhelm impressed for the Lions at the Marv Frye Invitational. Wilhelm earned a 5th Place finish in the Discus Throw with a mark of 35.39M (116ft 1in). Wilhelm also earned the runner-up in the Javelin Throw with a mark of 34.47M (113ft 1in).
