Rose-Hulman wins the 2023 HCAC Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Rose-Hulman captured the men’s title on Saturday in the 2023 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship.

The Rose-Hulman Fightin’ Engineers win the indoor track and field championship with a score of 181.33, just edging out Manchester, who tallied 135 points. Bluffton took third with 79 points, while Anderson took fourth with 51 points. Franklin (50.33) finished in fifth, Mount St. Joseph (38.33) took sixth, Earlham (36) finished seventh, Hanover (35) placed eight and Transylvania (33) and Defiance (17) finished in ninth and tenth respectively. 

The day got started on the track in the 5000 meter, with Manchester taking two of the top-three slots with Enrique Salazar earning his third-straight title with a time of 15:10.99, setting a new HCAC Championship record. In the Distance Relay, it was Earlham who took first, with the team of Ethan Rose, Micah Smith, Conner Kimball, and Alexander Roberts teaming up for a time of 10:56.73. 

In the 4x200 relay it was the Rose-Hulman team of Tyce Miller, Ian Lemons, Jack Cox and Jailen Hobbs who finished first, with a time of 1:30.83. In the mile, Enrique Salazar won the first event for Manchester, racing a time of 4:34.65. 

In a tightly contested 60 meter dash, Jailen Hobbs of Rose-Hulman came out on top, besting the competition and setting a new HCAC mark with a run of 6.83 seconds. Desmond Gist from Bluffton defended his 2022 title for the Beavers, taking the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 8.28. In the 400 meter dash, Raymond Bates of Rose-Hulman finished on top, with a run of 50.43 taking the event. 

In the 800 meter run Earlham’s Conner Kimball finished first, turning in a time of 1:59.70. In the 200 meter dash, Jailen Hobbs ran a time of 22.41 to pick up the win for Rose-Hulman. 

In the final two events of the championship, Enrique Salazar won the 3000 meter race, capping off a great meet for the Manchester Senior. Bluffton capped off the indoor championship, winning the 4x400 meter relay with the team of Blayden McCoy, Russell Lough, Jayden McConnell, and Simon Shawk turning in a time of 3:27.79 for the win.  

In the field events, the Pole Vault was the first event of the day, with Rose-Hulman’s Logan McLaughlin clearing a height of 3.65 meters for the win. In the weight throw Anderson’s Micahel Sweigart’s throw of 16.89 meters placed him on top of the podium. In the other throwing event, the shot put, Benjamin Villafuerte of Manchester bested the competition with a throw of 16.45 meters setting a new HCAC Championship Meet Record. 

In the high jump, Kyle Brownell from Rose-Hulman cleared a height of 1.93 meters to take first in the event, his second straight conference championship. 

In the long jump, familiar face Justin Dreyling from Mount St. Joseph picked up a win, with a leap of 6.90 meters. Fightin’ Engineer Timothy Youndt of Rose-Hulman won the triple jump event, setting a new HCAC record of 14.40 meters for the win. 

The HCAC recognizes the top three finishers in events as HCAC All-Conference. The complete list of HCAC All-Conference honorees are listed below. In a vote of league coaches, the following student-athletes were honored with the marque awards of the meet:
