Manchester Wins 2022 HCAC Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship

HANOVER, Ind. – Manchester University won the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) 2022 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Saturday.

The Spartans captured the title behind 172 points. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology took second with 147 points, while Transylvania University finished in third with 104 points. Hanover College was just behind in fourth with 79 points, while Bluffton University rounded out the top half of scores with 77 points.
 
It was a busy day, with a host of HCAC individual champions crowned. In the field events, Joe Garling of Manchester won the hammer throw, throwing 51.06 meters. In the javelin throw, Nate Reynolds of Hanover stepped up, winning the event with a toss of 36.55 meters. In the triple jump, Mount St. Joseph’s Justin Dreyling repeated after winning the long jump title, clearing a distance of 14.31 meters. Wrapping up the jumps, it was Bluffton’s Joey Bonham who stood atop the podium in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.94 meters for the win.
 
The day on the track started with the 4x100 relay, where Manchester flexed their muscles to bring home the win, racing a time of 42.07 behind the team of Gabriel Melvin, Tristen Bronaugh, Quentin Willis and Duriel Moss, Jr.. In the 1500 meter run, Manchesters’s Enrique Salazar was victorious, with a time of 4:02.14.  
 
In the 110 meter hurdles, Bluffton’s Desmond GIst worked back on top of the podium, with a run of 14.99 capturing the title. Jacob Eve picked up a win for the Rose-Hulman in the 400 meter dash, with a time of 49.01. Fellow Fightin’ Engineer Jailen Hobbs also worked back to the top of the podium, this time in the 100 meter dash, with a time of 10.78.
 
Transylvania’s Garrett Elrod won the 800 meter race, with a time of 1:57.29. Tawon Cannon snagged Defiance’s first win of the day, taking home the 400 meter hurdles title, racing a time of 55.42. Rose-Hulman’s Jailen Hobbs continued his winning streak, taking the next event, the 200 meter dash, with a time of 21.85.
 
Manchester’s Enrique Salazar picked up a win in the 5000 meter run, with a time of 15:17.95 securing the top spot. Bluffton would win the final race of the day, the 4x400 relay, with Blayden McCoy, Desmond Gist, Russell Lough and Jayden McConnell teaming up for the win with a time of 3:21.64.
 
In a vote of league coaches, the following student-athletes were honored with the marque awards of the meet:

Men’s Most Outstanding Sprints/Hurdles Athlete of the Year: Jailen Hobbs, Rose-Hulman
Men’s Most Outstanding Distance Athlete of the Year: Enrique Salazar, Manchester
Men’s Coach of the Year: Brian Cashdollar, Manchester
 
The HCAC recognizes an All-Conference team, with the first team comprised of first-place finishers, the second team of second place finishers and the honorable mention team made up of third place finishers. Those students who made All-Conference are listed below.
