Manchester wins the 2022 HCAC Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Manchester University captured the men’s title on Saturday in the 2022 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship.

The Spartans win their first indoor track and field championship with a score of 158.50, just edging out Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, who tallied 154 points. Transylvania University took third with 66 points, while Bluffton University took fourth with 64 points. Franklin College (62) finished in fifth, Hanover College (47) took sixth, Anderson University (32) finished seventh, Defiance College (27) placed eight and Earlham College (23) and Mount St. Joseph University (11.50) finished in ninth and tenth respectively.  
 
The day got started on the track in the 5000 meter, with Manchester sweeping the event top-three and Enrique Salazar earning his second-straight title with a time of 15:41.28. In the Distance Relay, it was Franklin who took first, with the team of Elliott Gough, Michael Heading, Eli Cochrane and Jack Sells teaming up for a time of 11:04.69.
 
In the 4x200 relay it was the Rose-Hulman team of Jacob Jagger, Ian Lemons, Prescott Brackett and Jailen Hobbs who finished first, with a time of 1:31.27. In the mile, Enrique Salazar won the first event for Manchester, racing a time of 4:25.43.
 
In a tightly contested 60 meter dash, Jailen Hobbs of Rose-Hulman came out on top, besting the competition and setting a new HCAC mark with a run of 6.85 seconds. Desmond Gist from Bluffton defended his 2021 title for the Beavers, taking the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 8.49. In the 400 meter dash, Jacob Eve of Rose-Hulman finished on top, with a run of 50.78 taking the event.
 
In the 800 meter run Manchester’s Enrique Salazar raced himself back on top of the podium, turning in a time of 1:58.57. In the 200 meter dash, Jailen Hobbs ran a time of 22.55 to pick up the win for Rose-Hulman.
 
In the final two events of the championship, Manchester’s Enrique Salazar won the 3000 meter race, finding his way to the top of the podium for an outstanding fourth time. Rose-Hulman capped off the day, winning the 4x400 meter relay with the team of Isaiah Lilje, Jonathan Rogers, Will Thesken and Jacob Eve turning in a time of 3:30.48 for the win.  
 
In the field events, the Pole Vault was the first event of the day, with Hanover’s Jalen Simmons clearing a height of 4.25 meters for the win. In the weight throw Franklin’s Zak Wiley’s throw of 16.33 meters placed him on top of the podium, defending his 2021 title in the event. In the other throwing event, the shot put, Jake Kehoe bested the competition with a throw of 14.20 meters for Hanover.
 
In the high jump, Kyle Brownell from Rose-Hulman cleared a height of 1.97 meters to take first in the event.
 
In the long jump, familiar face Desmond Gist from Bluffton picked up a win, with a leap of 6.52 meters. Fellow Fightin’ Engineer Timothy Youndt won the triple jump event, clearing 13.74 meters for the win.
 
The HCAC recognizes the top three finishers in events as HCAC All-Conference. The complete list of HCAC All-Conference honorees are listed below. In a vote of league coaches, the following student-athletes were honored with the marque awards of the meet:
