CARMEL, Ind. – The Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference (HCLC) released the 2021 Women’s Lacrosse All-Conference Teams and award winners on Tuesday.
Transylvania University swept the major player awards.
Courtney Pontious (Caledonia, Mich.) was named the Offensive Player of the Year. The senior midfielder tallied 49 goals over the course of the 2021 season, with 15 assists for 64 points. She added 38 draw controls, 30 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers. Pontious also boasts a 49.5 percent shooting percentage and a 79.8 shots on goal percentage.
Pioneer teammate
Salem Carlow (West Chester, Pa.) earned the title of 2021 HCLC Defensive Player of the year. The senior led a defense that only allowed 17 goals in conference play, and picked up 69 draw controls, 32 ground balls and 11 caused turnover. The midfielder also racked up 47 goals and 26 assists for 73 points in 2021. Her shooting percentage was an impressive 55.7 percent, with a shots on goal of 66.7 percent.
The pioneers also had a fresh face earn some recognition, with First Year
Ysa Leon (Louisville, Ky.) named the 2021 HCLC Newcomer of the Year. The first year netted 17 goals and dished out nine assists for 26 points. The midfielder had one game-winning goal in 2021, with 37 ground balls, 13 caused turnovers and 16 draw controls.
The HCLC also recognizes a Coach of the Year, with Franklin’s
Chris Wilham earning the honor in a vote amongst league coaches. The Grizzlies front man led them to their first program post-season appearance, finishing with a 1-3 mark in HCLC play.
Offensive Player of the Year: Courtney Pontious, Transylvania University
Defensive Player of the Year: Salem Carlow, Transylvania University
Newcomer of the Year: Ysa Leon, Transylvania University
Coach of the Year: Chris Wilham, Franklin College
The HCLC also honors an All-Conference First Team and Second Team. The members of those teams are selected by a vote of league coaches.
