GREENWOOD, IN – The HCAC women’s
basketball tournament will get underway Friday night with opening
round action from Transylvania. The six-team tournament will
decide who receives the conference’s automatic bid to the
NCAA Division III tournament. The event will be held at
Transylvania University, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Transylvania (23-2, 17-1 HCAC) heads into the tournament with a
9-1 record in their last 10 contests, winning the HCAC title for
the fifth time in school history.
The Pioneers posted a 9-1 record against the five other schools
involved in the conference tournament. Hanover (16-9, 14-4
HCAC) earned a 6-4 mark against the field, while Franklin (13-12,
11-7 HCAC) finished 5-5. Bluffton (14-11, 10-8 HCAC) and
Manchester (13-12, 10-8 HCAC) claimed a 4-6 record, while
Rose-Hulman (10-15, 8-10 HCAC) stood 2-8 vs. the tourney teams.
Top seed Transylvania will take on the winner of Bluffton and
Manchester Saturday afternoon in the HCAC semifinals.
Transylvania posted a sweep of the Beavers and Spartans this
season.
Bluffton claimed a 6-4 record, while Manchester went 5-5 down
the stretch heading into the postseason tournament. The No. 4
seed Beavers will look to move into the semifinals with a win over
No. 5 Manchester Friday night at Transylvania. The two teams
split their two regular season meetings. BU and MU will tip
at 6:00 PM Friday night at Transylvania University’s Beck
Center.
The Hanover women will be searching for their second consecutive
tournament championship this weekend. The Panthers enter the
2014 tournament as the No. 2 seed and will tangle with the winner
of Franklin and Rose-Hulman in the second semifinal at Transylvania
Saturday. The Panthers have won 11 of 12 heading into the
postseason and earned a split with Franklin and a sweep of Rose
during their meetings this season.
Franklin claimed the No. 3 seed and will play No. 6 Rose-Hulman
at 8:00 PM Friday night at Transylvania. The Grizzlies split
with the Engineers during their regular season meetings.
Franklin has gone 5-5 down the stretch, while Rose has earned a 3-7
mark during that span. The winner of Friday night’s
game will advance to the semis to face Hanover at Transy Saturday
evening.
The HCAC tournament championship game will take place at 2:00 PM
Sunday afternoon at Transylvania.
Tickets will be $6.00 per session ($5.00 for students and senior
citizens). Children under the age of 11 are free.
