GREENWOOD, IN – The HCAC women’s
basketball tournament will get underway Friday night with opening
round action from Transylvania. The six-team tournament will
decide who receives the conference’s automatic bid to the
NCAA Division III tournament. The event will be held at
Transylvania University, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Transylvania (20-5, 16-2 HCAC) heads into the tournament with a
9-1 record in their last 10 contests, winning the HCAC title for
the fourth time in school history.
The Pioneers posted an 8-2 record against the five other schools
involved in the conference tournament. Franklin (21-4, 15-3
HCAC) earned a 7-3 mark against the field, while Hanover (18-7,
12-6 HCAC) finished 5-5. Defiance (14-11, 11-7 HCAC) and
Manchester (10-15, 9-9 HCAC) claimed a 4-6 record, while
Rose-Hulman (12-13, 8-10 HCAC) stood 2-8 vs. the tourney teams.
Top seed Transylvania will take on the winner of Defiance and
Manchester Saturday afternoon in the HCAC semifinals.
Transylvania posted a sweep of Defiance and Manchester this
season.
Defiance earned a 5-5 record, while Manchester went 4-6 down the
stretch heading into the postseason tournament. The No. 4
seed Yellow Jackets will look to move into the semifinals with a
win over No. 5 Manchester Friday night at Transylvania.
Manchester swept Defiance during their two regular season
meetings. The two teams will tip at 6:00 PM Friday night at
Transylvania University’s Beck Center.
The Franklin women will be searching for their second
consecutive tournament championship this weekend.
The Grizzlies enter the 2013 tournament as the No. 2 seed and will
tangle with the winner of Hanover and Rose-Hulman in the second
semifinal at Transylvania Saturday. The Grizzlies have won 15
of 16 heading into the postseason and earned a split with Hanover
and a sweep of Rose during their meetings this season.
Hanover claimed the No. 3 seed and will play No. 6 Rose-Hulman
at 8:00 PM Friday night at Transylvania. The Panthers swept
the Engineers during their regular season meetings. Hanover
has gone 7-3 down the stretch, while Rose has earned a 6-4 mark
during that span. The winner of Friday night’s game
will advance to the semis to face Franklin at Transy Saturday
afternoon.
The HCAC tournament championship game will take place at 2:00 PM
Sunday afternoon at Transylvania.
Tickets will be $6.00 per session ($5.00 for students and senior
citizens). Children under the age of 11 are free.
