GREENWOOD, IN – The HCAC women's basketball tournament will get underway Friday night with opening round action from Franklin.  The six-team tournament will decide who receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.  The semifinals and finals will also be held at Franklin College Saturday and Sunday.

Franklin (23-2, 16-2 HCAC) heads into the tournament with a 9-1 record in their last 10 contests, sharing the HCAC title with rival Hanover.  It was Franklin's sixth HCAC crown and Hanover's second-straight.

The Grizzlies posted an 8-2 record against the five other schools involved in the conference tournament.  Hanover (20-4, 16-2 HCAC) also earned an 8-2 mark against the field, while Manchester (17-8, 13-5 HCAC) finished 6-4.  Transylvania (13-12, 11-7 HCAC) claimed a 5-5 record, while Defiance (11-14, 9-9 HCAC) managed only a single win against the field.  No. 6 seed Rose-Hulman (8-17, 6-12 HCAC) stood 2-8 vs. the tourney teams.

Franklin earned the school's sixth HCAC women's basketball championship this season.  The top seed Grizzlies will take on the winner of Transylvania and Defiance Saturday afternoon in the HCAC semifinals.  Franklin posted a sweep of Transylvania and Defiance this season.

Transylvania earned a 7-3 record, while Defiance went 5-5 down the stretch heading into the postseason tournament.  The No. 4 seed Pioneers will look to move into the semifinals with a win over No. 5 Defiance Friday night at Franklin.  TU swept DC during their two regular season meetings.  The two teams will tip at 6:00 PM Friday night at Franklin College.

The Hanover women will be searching for their second consecutive tournament championship this weekend.  The Panthers enter the 2012 tournament as the No. 2 seed and will tangle with the winner of Manchester and Rose-Hulman in the second semifinal at Franklin Saturday.  The Panthers have won 14 of 15 heading into the postseason and earned sweeps against Manchester and Rose during their meetings this season. 

Manchester claimed the No. 3 seed and will play No. 6 Rose-Hulman at 8:00 PM Friday night at Franklin.  The Spartans swept the Engineers during their regular season meetings.  Manchester has won three of four, while Rose has claimed wins in two of their last six contests.  The winner of Friday night's game will advance to the semis to face Hanover at Franklin Saturday afternoon.

The HCAC tournament championship game will take place at 2:00 PM Sunday afternoon at Franklin College.

Tickets will be $5.00 per session ($4.00 for students and senior citizens).  Children under the age of 11 are free.
