Rose-Hulman Men and Manchester Women Claim HCAC Track & Field Championship

TERRE HAUTE, IN - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's track and field team held off Manchester at the 2009 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships held at Rose-Hulman on April 24-25. The Engineers scored 192 points in the 20 events to hold off Manchester 's 138.5 point effort to claim the school's second straight HCAC men's track title. The Manchester women's track team earned their first track and field title in school history, holding off Defiance and Franklin in a highly contested meet.

The Rose-Hulman men had five event winners. Freshman Sutton Coleman (Lebanon , Va. /H.S.) claimed titles in three different events at the meet. The freshman won both the 110 and 400 meter hurdles and also claimed first place in the triple jump. Junior Travis Vanderberg (Kansas City , Mo. /Park Hill) earned the top throw in the javelin, capturing the title with a toss of 52.95 meters. The Rose Hulman 4x400 relay team was the fastest on the day, winning the conference title with a time of 3:21.28.

Manchester placed second in the men's team standings with 138.5 points. Defiance College tallied 91 points and was followed by Franklin College (84.5 points), Anderson University (84), Hanover College (75), College of Mount St. Joseph (62), Bluffton University (52), and Transylvania University (0).

The Manchester women's team won three events on its way to the conference championship. Sophomore Jessica Bremer (Howe , Ind. / Prairie Heights ) won the 400 meter hurdles title with a time of 1:08.44. Freshman Emma Weiler (Auburn , Ind. /DeKalb) topped the conference field in the high jump, clearing a league-best 1.58 meters. The Spartans 4x400 relay team ran to the championship, besting the field with a time of 4:11.78.

One conference record was broken at the 2009 championships. Anderson 's Michelle Roth (Milwaukee , Wis. /Lutheran) set a new league-best in the women's triple jump with a leap of 11.43 meters.

Defiance finished second in the women team standings with 132.5 points. Franklin placed third with 131 points. Anderson finished fourth with 107 points and was followed by Rose-Hulman (81 points), Mount St. Joseph (72), Hanover (51), Bluffton (45.5), and Transylvania (26).
