Rose-Hulman wins 10th HCAC Indoor Title

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The 2020 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Indoor Track and Field Championship was held at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday, with the Fightin' Engineers coming up big to take the title.
Rose-Hulman blew the competition out of the water with 204 points to win their 10th straight title. Earlham College finished in second with 108 points, Hanover College took third with 92 points, Manchester University claimed fourth with 54 points and Bluffton University finished in fifth with 51 points. Mount St. Joseph University (47) placed sixth, Franklin College (38) took seventh, Anderson University (30) placed eighth, Defiance College (23) finished in ninth and Transylvania University (15) came in 10th.
In the opening race of the meet, the men's 5K, Austin Burt from Earlham picked up the first individual title of the 2020 Championship with a time of 15:40.63. The Quakers rode the momentum, winning the following event, the men's distance medley relay, with the team of Henry Foultner, Daryn Strub, Michael Grady and Cade Orchard running a time of 10:49.15 for the win.
Keeping on the track, in the 4x200 men's relay Mount St. Joseph won the event, with Lee Bennett, Tre'on Taylor, Chase Samples, and Cameron Willis racing a time of 1:33.43 to claim the top spot. Rose-Hulman's Matthew Stevenot won a pair of races for the Fightin' Engineers, with a time of 4:24.43 in the one-mile and a 3K run of 8:53.54 to finish first.
In the sprints, Brandon Green won the 60 meter hurdles for Mount St. Joseph, with a time of 8.45. Bryce Gatewood picked up a first-place finish for Hanover, with a run of 51.19 in the 400 meter dash securing the win. Lee Bennett put the Lions back on top of the podium in the 60 meter dash, with a run of 7.15 winning the event.
Jacob Burnam picked up Transylvania's first victory of the day, winning the 800 meter event with a time of 1:54.93. In the men's 200 meter dash, Kristian Zadlo of Rose-Hulman won the event, with a time of 23.18. Capping off the day, Hanover's 4x400 team won the event, with a team of Riley Cook, Paxton Caldwell, Aaron Rodgers and Bryce Gatewood teaming up for a time of 3:29.28.
In the field, Brandon James got things rolling for Bluffton, capturing the men's triple jump with a mark of 13.35m. In the men's shot put and weight throw, Nathan Schrader brought home top prize for Rose-Hulman, with a throw of 15.34m in the shot put and a mark of 17.59m in the weight throw. Rose-Hulman's Kyle Brownell picked up a win in the men's high jump, with a winning leap of 2.04m.
Justin Kauffman from Bluffton won the men's pole vault event, clearing a height of 4.35m to stand atop the podium. Erikmycal Powell of Hanover won the men's long jump event, clearing 6.51m for the top-spot.
The HCAC recognizes the top three finishers in events as HCAC All-Conference. The complete list of HCAC All-Conference honorees are listed below. In a vote of league coaches, the following student-athletes were honored with the marque awards of the meet:
Men's Indoor Most Valuable Runner of the Meet: Matthew Stevenot, Rose-Hulman
Men's Indoor Most Valuable Field Athlete of the Meet: Nathan Schrader, Rose-Hulman
Men's Indoor Freshman of the Year: Erikmycal Powell, Hanover
Men's Coach of the Year: Larry Cole, Rose-Hulman
