Mount’s Prosser and Rose-Hulman’s Eitel Headline All-HCAC Football Selections

GREENWOOD, IN - The College of Mount St. Joseph placed eleven players on the 2009 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference First Team, including the conference's defensive Most Valuable Player. Mount St. Joseph's Erik Prosser (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) has been named the HCAC Defensive Most Valuable Player for the first time. Lions' head coach Rod Huber garnered Coach of the Year honors for the third time in his career.
Rose-Hulman's Derek Eitel (Marshall, Ill./H.S.) was honored as Offensive Most Valuable Player for 2009, while his teammate Kyle Kovach (Munster, Ind./Andrean) picked up the Freshman of the Year award. Manchester College's Chris Cecil (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) was selected as Special Teams Most Valuable Player this fall.
Prosser, a junior linebacker for the Lions, led the Mount defense that helped propel MSJ to a conference championship. The junior led the Lions with 103 tackles, and added 5.5 tackles for loss, one sack, two fumble recoveries (1st HCAC), and three forced fumbles (2nd HCAC). As a team, Mount St. Joseph ranked fourth in the conference in team defense (331.7 ypg) and led the conference in scoring defense (21.5 ppg).
Eitel, a senior quarterback for Rose-Hulman, threw for 2,723 yards this season and helped his team to four consecutive seasons of six or more wins for the first time in school history. The senior set single-season school records for passing yards (2,723), efficiency (152.8), and touchdown passes (24) during the 2009 season. He also established career school records for career passing yards (7,507) and touchdowns (52) during his time in Terre Haute. Eitel crossed the 300 yard mark passing four times during the season, including a 422 yard effort against Franklin (2nd in school history).
Cecil, a senior return specialist for Manchester, returned a punt and a kickoff for a touchdown for the Spartans this season. The senior totaled 439 yards and averaged 20.0 yards per kickoff return this season, highlighted by an 89 yard return for a score against Anderson. He added a league-best 14.7 yards per punt return this fall, including an 88 yard return for a touchdown against Mount St. Joseph.
Kovach, a freshman running back for Rose-Hulman, started the last seven games of the season after Calvin Bueltel ended his season with a knee injury in week three. The freshman was instrumental in the Engineer running game, finishing the season with 736 yards and nine touchdowns. His 736 yards and nine rushing touchdowns ranked second in the HCAC in both categories.
Mount St. Joseph head coach Rod Huber has been selected as the HCAC Coach of the Year for the third time in his career. He guided the Lions to their fourth conference title and a 9-1 overall record. The Mount finished alone in first place in the HCAC with a perfect 7-0 mark. The only loss this season for MSJ was a 42-17 defeat to rival Thomas More in the final game of the regular season. The Lions open the NCAA Playoffs Saturday at Wittenberg.
