A New Chapter for a Historic AU Landmark
Macholtz Stadium is entering a defining moment in its nearly 50-year history as Anderson University begins construction on long-awaited upgrades that will shape the future of Raven athletics. With a generous restricted gift from a faithful donor couple, AU now has the green light to launch Phase I of the renovation plan, signaling a new era for a facility that has supported generations of student-athletes since 1977.
This restricted gift, designated solely for Macholtz Stadium, honors the donors’ intent and moves the project forward. Their generosity allows AU to begin work on renovations that reflect a renewed commitment to the student-athlete experience and the role athletics plays in building community on campus.
Honoring a Legacy That Spans Nearly 50 Years
For decades, Macholtz Stadium has been home to AU football, track and field, additional sports, intramurals, and visiting summer camps. It has served as a place where students learned discipline, teamwork, and leadership. The stadium’s renewal represents more than a construction update. The mission is rising in a new way through this investment in the students who will compete, cheer, coach, and grow within its gates.
What Phase I Will Deliver
Phase I of the renovation focuses on foundational improvements designed to enhance safety, accessibility, and functionality. Features include:
- Right-sized seating for home and visiting fans
- Wheelchair-accessible seating
- A modern, appropriately sized press box
Anderson University will work with the contracted partners to determine dates this spring to break ground; however, demolition and removal of the old stands have begun. The goal is to host home competitions in the updated facility this fall.
Years in the Making
This moment follows several years of planning, problem-solving, and unwavering commitment. AU installed new field turf in 2023 as the first step toward broader improvements, knowing that a comprehensive stadium renovation would require both vision and stewardship. As construction estimates for various stadium build options were received, it became clear that their sticker prices did not align with AU’s long-term affordability goals, including its work to address the cost of attendance and its aim to launch a tuition freeze for current and incoming students.
Rather than step back, the university pursued solutions that protected its mission while still advancing its athletic facilities. Through that process, AU identified a sustainable, cost-effective partnership with Bleacher Builders, securing durable, high-quality seating and functional upgrades without compromising its commitment to students or its future. Today’s progress is a testament to perseverance and responsible action. AU rose to meet the challenge.
Looking Ahead to Phase II
While Phase I is fully funded by this recent restricted gift, AU continues to raise funds for additional essential enhancements, including renovating and branding the building already standing beneath the current stadium. Improvements include:
- Upgrading restrooms on the north and south ends of the stadium
- Improving the concessions area on the south end
- Creating storage space for football and outdoor equipment
These features remain key to completing the full vision for Macholtz Stadium. The university welcomes continued support from alumni, families, and friends who want to help bring this project to completion.
