HCAC 2025 Cross Country Notebook, Week 6

CARMEL, Ind. – The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Cross Country teams competed in week six of the 2025 season.

Athletes of the Week: 
Men’s Athlete of the Week:
William Hirsch (Evansville, Ind.) Franklin College | Sophomore - Hirsch had a strong showing to lead the Grizzlies up front at the Oberlin Inter-Region Rumble. He moved up throughout and finished as the 20th collegiate runner. His time of 26:06 was a 22 second PR and moves him up to #12 on the FC all-time 8K list.

Women’s Athlete of the Week:
Amanda Zerhusen (Cincinnati, Ohio) Mount St. Joseph University | Sophomore - Amanda set the women’s 5K XC school record (18:55) while finishing 9th at the JennaStrong meet at Wilmington College.

Notable Performances:
Men's:
  • Austin Gatewood (Azale, Texas) Berea College | Junior - Berea's Austin Gatewood made an incredible run for the best individual time of his career on Friday, October 17th at the JennaStrong Fall Classic, ultimately finishing second overall on the team for the first time in his career. Gatewood's time of 28:26.8 is 70+ seconds faster than his previous PR and 90+ seconds faster than the time he ran at the course previously.
  • Gavin Byerly (Huntington, Ind.) Manchester University | Senior - Gavin continues to lead the Spartans with another good performance. Finishing 11th at the oberlin meet over the weekend.  His time was 25:55.
Women's:
  • Brooke Donley (Moscow, Ohio) Berea College | Senior - For the Mountaineers, Brooke Donley ran to a lifetime PR on Friday at the JennaStrong Fall Classic in the 5K race. The Ohio native clocked 21:57.2 for just the first time, going sub-22 minutes in the 5K. The time is a 50-second improvement over Donley's previous best mark.
  • Callie Swegman (Columbus, Ind.) Hanover College | Senior - Callie finished 6th overall out of a field of 194 and first among HCAC runners in the Jenna Strong Fall Classic at Wilmington College. Her time of 18:49 for the 5k race was a 28 second PR and is the sixth fastest 5k time in Hanover Cross Country history.
  • Chesnee Miller (Akron, Ind.) Manchester University | Sophomore - Chesnee ran just 1 second off her PR this weekend finishing 7th at the Oberlin meet with a time of 22:15.
  • Jocelyn Onstot (Cary, Ill.) Rose-Hulman Institute of Techonolgy | Junior - Jocelyn Onstot finished 46th overall out of 349 individuals in the Women’s Gold Race at the Augustana Interregional Invitational in Rock Island, Illinois.  She completed the 6k course in a time of 22:51.6.
  • Maggie Simmons (Lexington, Ky.) Transylvania University | Junior - Maggie ran a huge lifetime best over 6k at Angel Mounds this past weekend, finishing in 25:34.1. Her mark from this past weekend is 42 seconds faster than her next best performance at that distance.
