Terre Haute, Ind. – The 2020 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships wrapped up on Sunday, with Franklin College claiming the women’s title and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology taking the men’s.
Rose-Hulman captured the men's title with a score of 732, narrowly beating out Franklin College, who earned 728 points. Transylvania University finished third with 296, Anderson University placed fourth with 302 and Manchester University was fifth with 3 points.
On the women's side, Franklin took the title with a dominating 879 points. Transylvania finished second with 409 points, while Anderson took third with 369. Manchester posted 12 points for fifth.
In the first event of the evening,
Allyson Carroll came up big in the 1650 Yard Freestyle, with a swim of 18:34.10 to win the event for Franklin. Fellow Grizzly
Caileigh McCafferty won the 200 Yard Backstroke, touching in a time of 2:09.15.
Brynna Sentel won the 100 Yard Freestyle, with a swim of 52.13 for Franklin.
August Hartzell swam to a win in the 200 Yard Breaststroke, with her time of 2:21.47 besting the competition.
Samantha Phillips snagged a win in the 200 Yard Butterfly, touching in a time of 2:09.81.
In the final event for the women, Franklin continued its dominance, taking the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay behind swims from
Sentel, Livie Walther, August Hartzell and
McCafferty with a time of 3:34.11.
For the men, the first event of the night went to Rose-Hulman’s
Evan Sellers, who swam a time of 16:14.42 in the 1650 Yard Freestyle. In the 200 Yard Backstroke Franklin’s
Jack Burke won the event with a time of 1:51.38. Rose-Hulman’s
Jared Brown won the 100 Yard Freestyle, touching in a time of 45.41.
Kosmo Wojack turned in a time of 2:04.40 in the 200 Yard Breaststroke to claim the event for Franklin. In the 200 Yard Butterfly,
Charlie Hall claimed the top spot, with his swim of 1:51.00 besting the competition.
On the boards,
Gague Creech from Franklin secured the win in the 1 meter dive, with a score of 506.65.
It came down to the final event to declare a winner for the men, with the 400 Yard Freestyle relay team of
Zachary Tate, Dutch Kipp, Logan McLaughlin and
Brown securing the victory with a time of 3:04.53.
The marquee award winners were honored at the close of the meet, with Franklin's
Sentel named the 2021 HCAC Women's Swimmer of the Meet and
Hall earning the title of 2021 HCAC Men's Swimmer of the Meet.
On the boards a first-year stepped up to take the women’s title of 2021 HCAC Diver of the Meet, with Transylvania’s
Kennedy Minter earning the award. Franklin’s
Creech defended his 2020 title on the boards, taking home his second straight HCAC Diver of the Meet.
Another pair of first-years to earn honors were the Newcomer of the Year. From Franklin
Samanatha Phillips took the honor of 2021 HCAC Women's Newcomer of the Year. Representing Rose-Hulman,
Evan Sellers was named the 2021 HCAC Men's Freshman of the Year.
Finally, the coach of the year was honored.
Andrew Hendricks from Franklin was named the both the men’s and women’s 2021 HCAC Coach of the Year.
