GREENWOOD, IN – The 2013-14 HCAC
men’s basketball regular season has come to a close and the
action shifts to tournament play this week. The winner of the
six-team HCAC Tournament will earn the conference’s automatic
qualifier for the NCAA Division III men’s basketball
tournament.
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (20-5, 15-3 HCAC) locked up
the conference’s top seed last Wednesday, defeating Franklin
71-69. RHIT captured its second-straight men’s
basketball conference championship with the victory and will strive
for their third consecutive HCAC tournament title this weekend.
Rose and Defiance posted a 7-3 record against the HCAC
tournament field, while Hanover and Mount St. Joseph finished 6-4
against the qualifiers. Transylvania and Franklin each posted
a 2-8 mark against the competition.
The top seed Engineers are currently ranked No. 24 in the
D3hoops.com poll, finishing the season with an 8-2 record down the
stretch. Rose-Hulman will take on the winner of Mount St.
Joseph and Transylvania Friday night in the HCAC semifinals.
RHIT earned a split against the Lions and Pioneers during the
regular season.
Mount St. Joseph (16-8, 13-5 HCAC) enters the tournament as the
No. 4 seed and has posted four straight victories heading into
tournament play. The Lions will look to move into the
semifinals with a win at home over No. 5 Transylvania Tuesday
night. The Mount posted a season sweep of the Pioneers.
Transylvania (9-16, 7-11 HCAC) will look to get back on track after
earning a 3-7 mark down the stretch this season. MSJ and TU
will tip at 7:30 PM Tuesday night in Cincinnati.
Defiance (20-5, 15-3 HCAC) earned a share of its first HCAC
title since the 2007-08 season and earned the No. 2 seed in this
week’s tournament. The Jackets have won nine of 10 down
the stretch heading into the postseason tourney. DC will face
the winner of Hanover and Franklin in the other semifinal Friday
night at Rose-Hulman. The Jackets swept Franklin and earned a
split with Hanover during the regular season.
Hanover (17-8, 13-5 HCAC) claimed the No. 3 seed and will play
host to No. 6 Franklin Tuesday night. The Panthers and
Grizzlies (10-15, 7-11 HCAC) split their regular season series with
each team winning on the road. Hanover finished the season 7-3
heading into tournament play, while Franklin finished the season
4-6. FC and HC will tip at 7:30 PM Tuesday night.
The HCAC tournament championship game will take place at 7:00 PM
Saturday evening from Rose-Hulman.
Tickets will be $6.00 per session ($5.00 for students and senior
citizens). Children under the age of 11 are free.
