GREENWOOD, Ind. --- The 2016 women's tennis season will come to a close this weekend as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championships will be held this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Indianapolis. This year's tournament will once again be held at West Indy Racquet Club.
Hanover claimed the school's seventh HCAC regular season championship and will look to earn the conference's automatic qualifier for the NCAA tournament this coming spring by taking the tournament title. The regular season crown was the fourth-straight for the Panthers.
Hanover (8-0 HCAC) has been led by Mackenzie Spicer (Indianapolis, Ind. / Lawrence Central) at the No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles position this fall, posting a 16-0 overall conference record. Freshman Cami Jones (Richmond, Ind. / Richmond) finished the season 7-1 at No. 2 singles and claimed a 6-1 mark at No. 3 doubles.
Rosee-Hulman finished second in the standings and earned the No. 2 seed with a 7-1 league record. The Fightin' Engineers dropped a 6-3 decision to the Panthers back on September 18. Rose-Hulman's Anna Thompson (Anderson, S.C. / Christ Church Episcopal) has been solid for the Engineers all season, earning a 5-3 record at No. 1 singles and a 5-3 mark at No. 1 doubles.
As the top two seeds, Hanover and Rose-Hulman avoid an opening round contest and will play in the conference semifinals at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Franklin College will have the No. 3 seed this weekend and will face Transylvania University in an opening round match at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The Pioneers (4-4 HCAC) defeated the Grizzlies (5-3 HCAC) 7-2 on September 18. The winner of the match Saturday advances to face No. 2 Rose-Hulman.
