Franklin’s Melissa Sanders Earns HCAC Women’s Tennis MVP Honors

GREENWOOD, IN – Franklin College's Melissa Sanders (Columbus, Ind./North) has been named the 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women's tennis Most Valuable Player.  Sanders is the second Franklin women's tennis athlete to earn the honor, joining Kelly Vance who was a four-time MVP recipient (2000-2003).      

Sanders completed her sophomore season with an overall dual match record of 17-6, while finishing the conference season with a 13-3 mark.  Sanders finished 10-1, 8-0 HCAC at No. 1 singles and 7-5, 5-3 HCAC at No. 1 doubles this fall.

Thirteen other players join Sanders on the All-HCAC first team, including two other sophomores, two freshman, two juniors, and seven seniors. Anderson's Courtney Postmus (Kalamazoo, Mich.), Earlham's Olivia Engle (Richmond, Ind.), Franklin's Bethany Harris (Avon, Ind.), Hanover's Danielle Miller (Fairway, Kan.) and Mackenzie Spicer (Indianapolis, Ind.), Manchester's Kara Gilley (Plymouth, Ind.) and Brandy Leeper (Bremen, Ind.), Rose-Hulman's Marie Stettler (Edgerton, Wis.) and Suzana Mohd (Puchong, Malaysia), and Transylvania's Claire Mielcarek (Lexington, Ky.), Laila El Dessouki (Cairo, Egypt), Megan Dixon (Ocala, Fla.), and Victoria Haugli (London, England) have been named to this year's team.

Transylvania's Laila El Dessouki (Cairo, Egypt/German School of Cairo) was named the conference's Freshman of the Year.  El Dessouki finished with a 15-1 overall conference record during the regular season and claimed an 8-0 HCAC record at No. 2 singles and a 7-1 mark at No. 1 doubles for the Pioneers.  She won at No. 1 singles and doubles in a 5-3 loss to Anderson in the HCAC tournament.

Also receiving special recognition this season is Hanover head coach Rich Lord. Lord led the Panthers to the conference title (8-0 HCAC) and the HCAC tournament championship, earning the school's first NCAA Division III women's tennis tournament berth.  The award is Lord's first honor as women's tennis coach at Hanover.
