HCAC Women’s Tennis Field Set for Weekend Tournament in Indy

Tournament Program

GREENWOOD, IN – The 2013 women's tennis season will come to a close this weekend, as the HCAC Tennis Championships will be held this Saturday and Sunday in Indianapolis.  This year's tournament will once again be held at West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis.

Hanover College claimed the school's fourth HCAC women's tennis championship and will look to earn the conference's automatic qualifier for the NCAA tournament this coming spring by taking the tournament title.  The regular season crown was the first for the Panthers since 2008.

Hanover (8-0 HCAC) has been led by senior Danielle Miller (Fairway, Kan.) at the No. 1 singles and doubles position this fall, posting a 13-2 overall conference record.  Teaming up with Miller at the No. 1 doubles position has been freshman Mackenzie Spicer (Indianapolis, Ind.).  Spicer holds a 5-3 mark at No. 2 singles and a 7-1 record in doubles.

Rose-Hulman finished in a three-way tie for second in the standings and earned the No. 2 seed with a 6-2 league record. The Engineers dropped a 5-4 decision to the Panthers during the regular season.  RHIT's Suzana Mohd (Puchong, Malaysia) has been solid for the Engineers all season, earning a 7-1 record at No. 2 singles and a 5-2 mark at No. 1 doubles.  Senior Marie Stettler (Edgerton, Wis.) has played the top spot for Rose all season long, earning a 4-4 singles mark.

As the top two seeds, Hanover and Rose-Hulman avoid an opening round contest and will play in the conference semifinals at 2:00 PM Saturday.

Franklin College will have the No. 3 seed this weekend and face Manchester University in an opening round match at 9:00 AM Saturday.  The Grizzlies (6-2 HCAC) defeated the Spartans (3-5 HCAC) 6-3 back on September 29.  The winner of the match Saturday advances to face No. 2 Rose-Hulman.

Transylvania University and Anderson University will battle in the No. 4/5 seed contest Saturday morning.  The Pioneers finished 6-2 in league play, while the Ravens boasted a 4-4 record.  Transy pulled out a 5-4 win over Anderson on October 12.  Hanover awaits the victor at 2:00 PM Saturday.

Action will get underway Saturday morning with opening round play at 9:00 AM.  The HCAC semifinals will be held approximately 2:00 PM Saturday with the championship match taking place at 10:00 AM Sunday morning.
