INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The 2019 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference softball tournament will take place this week at Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio. The host Lions earned the regular season championship after going 14-1, claiming the school's first ever HCAC softball title.
For the second year in a row, the HCAC softball tournament championship has expanded the competing field to five teams adding a new adjustment to the schedule. Transylvania, Franklin, Defiance and Anderson will be joining the Mount in the three day event beginning on Thursday.
Mount St. Joseph (33-5, 14-1 HCAC) will look to capture the school's third HCAC tournament title this weekend. The Lions pitching staff ranks first in the HCAC this spring, posting a 1.33 earned run average during league play. Mount St. Joseph is led by freshman Kamryn McCool who averages 8.69 strikeouts per seven innings and is currently ranked first in the conference with a 0.97 ERA in conference action. Mount St. Joseph adds a .323 batting average and a .427 slugging percentage in conference play this spring.
Transylvania (25-11, 14-2 HCAC) will battle the tournament field to capture the school's fourth HCAC tourney crown as the No. 2 seed. The Pioneer offense has been solid this season, averaging a conference best .359 at the plate with 99 RBI and 122 runs scored in 16 conference contests. The Transylvania pitching staff ranks second in the HCAC with 85 strikeouts in league play this spring and a 1.75 earned run average. The Pioneers are led by senior Brittany Mumford who ranks first on the leaderboard with 27 hits and 24 runs and ranks third with a .466 batting average in the conference games this spring.
Franklin (18-16, 10-6 HCAC) enters the tournament as the No. 3 seed this weekend in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Grizzlies are led by catcher Natalie Weber this season. Weber ranks fourth in the conference with a .462 batting average and adds 16 RBI during 16 HCAC games this spring. Junior Kayla Selzer leads the Grizzlies in the circle with 22 strikeouts and a 2.33 earned run average in 48.0 innings of work this spring.
Defiance (20-16, 9-7 HCAC) enters the softball tournament championship as the No. 4 seed. The Yellow Jackets have tallied a .333 batting average with a conference-leading 17 home runs in league games this spring. Defiance is led by freshman infielder Kalin Hubble who has contributed a .460 batting average with eight home runs and 19 RBI this spring.
Anderson (18-14, 8-8 HCAC) enters the league tournament as the No. 5 seed this weekend. The Ravens are led by junior pitcher Hadley Decker and junior infielder Tara Morey in Heartland action this season. Decker boasts 40 strikeouts and a 2.60 earned run average in the circle, while Morey adds a .418 batting average with 17 runs and five stolen bases this spring.
Action will get underway from Cincinnati, Ohio at 1 p.m. Thursday morning as No. 4 seed Defiance faces No. 5 seed Anderson. The full schedule for the 2019 HCAC Softball Tournament Championship can be found on the tournament website linked above.
Admission for the 2019 HCAC Softball Tournament is $8 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and students, and free for children aged 11 and under. Students, faculty, and staff of any HCAC institutions will be admitted for free with a campus ID. All-Session passes can also be purchased for the entire weekend and are $20 for adults and $10 for senior citizens and students.
