Softball Report (Week 8) - Anderson Takes Over Lead in HCAC Chase

GREENWOOD, IN - Anderson University claimed a pair of conference sweeps last week and now hold sole possession of first place in the race for a league title.  The Ravens (19-11, 9-3 HCAC) have won eight straight league contests following sweeps of Transylvania and Rose-Hulman this past week.

Freshman infielder Sami Frazier (Greenfield, Ind./H.S.) led the Ravens' offense during the week, going 7-for-9 (.778) at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored, five RBI, and a 1.000 slugging percentage.

In the circle, senior pitcher Devin Moorman (Batesville, Ind./H.S.) went 2-0 with a 0.58 ERA in 12 innings of work.  Moorman allowed seven hits and one run while striking out 12 in her two appearances.

Anderson can clinch a spot in next weekend's HCAC tournament with a single win this week.  The Ravens will close the conference season at home against Hanover and Mount St. Joseph Saturday and Sunday.

In other action...

Manchester (15-11, 7-3 HCAC) sits two games behind Anderson in the win column in the race for a league title.  The Spartans did not play a single contest last week due to weather.

MU has a busy week this week with DePauw, Huntington, Rose-Hulman, and Defiance on the schedule. The black and gold can also lock up a tournament berth with a single win against Rose or Defiance.

Bluffton (17-15, 9-5 HCAC) secured a HCAC tournament spot after a split with Hanover Saturday.  The Beavers have finished their portion of the league schedule and currently sit third in the standings.

Hanover (12-14, 7-5 HCAC) remains fourth in the standings following a split with Bluffton over the weekend. Sophomore pitcher Leah Kemmerer (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings Co.) tossed a one-hitter in a 8-0 win over Bluffton.  Kemmerer allowed her only hit in the fourth inning and finished with eight strikeouts. The shutout was the first time Bluffton has been blanked in HCAC play since April of 2010.

The Panthers will close the HCAC season against Mount St. Joseph and Anderson this week.

Franklin (13-23, 7-7 HCAC), Transylvania (9-21, 7-7 HCAC), and Defiance (12-18, 5-7 HCAC) remain alive in the race for a HCAC tournament bid.  The Grizzlies are schedule to face Mount St. Joseph Saturday, while Transy will face Defiance Saturday.

The 2013 HCAC Softball Tournament pairings will be released on Sunday evening.
