GREENWOOD, IN - Hanover College's softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Westminster College (Mo.) at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex. Hanover (3-9, 0-0 HCAC) captured the first game, 2-1, and blanked Westminster in the nightcap, 7-0.
Sophomore shortstop Danielle Merrick (Eminence, Ind./H.S.) keyed the Panthers' offense in two wins. Merrick finished the doubleheader 6-for-7 (.857) with two doubles, one run scored, and one RBI.
In the circle, sophomore Leah Kemmerer (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings Co.) tossed a complete-game in the second game of the twinbill. Kemmerer allowed just two hits through seven innings and tallied nine strikeouts. She pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning to help preserve her first collegiate shutout.
Hanover is scheduled to face Spalding on Thursday and Defiance Saturday.
In other action...
Rose-Hulman and Defiance split a HCAC doubleheader on Saturday. The Engineers (5-9, 1-1 HCAC) and Jackets (7-5, 1-1 HCAC) played a pair of extra innings contests with DC claiming game 1 (6-5) and Rose winning the second contest (5-4).
Bluffton and Transylvania also split a twinbill Saturday. The host Beavers (9-7, 1-1 HCAC) dropped a 10-4 decision to the Pioneers (3-13, 1-1 HCAC) in the first contest, but managed to pull out a 3-1 win in game two.
