LEXINGTON, KY – Tina Mangola has been named the new head coach for Transylvania softball, the Director of Athletics Holly Sheilley announced Tuesday.

"I am excited to have Tina Mangola join the Transylvania family as our next softball head coach," said Sheilley. "Coach Mangola success as both a player and as an assistant coach will continue to elevate our program to the next level."

Mangola comes to Transylvania from Ohio Northern University, where she was an assistant coach for one season. Mangola helped the Polar Bears to a seventh-consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference season championship with a record of 31-14, and a NCAA Division III National Championship appearance. While at ONU, Mangola was also recognized as a member of the NCAA DIII Central Regional National Coaching Staff of the Year.

Previously, Mangola had coaching stints as the assistant softball coach at Washington University in St. Louis, and as assistant JV softball coach at St. Joseph's Academy.

"I am thrilled to have Tina Mangola as our new head softball coach at Transylvania University," said Assistant Softball Coach Kimi Blewett. "With the return of Jodi Chmielewski as our additional assistant coach, I am confident that we will be able to provide a well-rounded and cohesive approach to take this team to the next level."

Mangola, a 2010 graduate of ONU, earned a bachelor's degree in middle childhood education. As a student-athlete, she earned Third Team All-America honors in 2007 and 2008 and was a four-year All-Ohio Athletic Conference honoree. She is currently among ONU's all-time career leaders in RBI (169), total bases (399), doubles (44), home runs (38), hits (217) and runs scored (175).

"I believe that her experience as a player and a coach will greatly contribute to the tradition of excellence we have established in our athletic department," said Blewett. "As former All-American teammates and national championship contenders, I am excited to share our experiences and knowledge with our student-athletes."

Pioneer softball opens their spring 2014 season on February 22 at the Rhodes College Invitational.
