INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – History was made Sunday afternoon, as the Hanover men's and women's cross country teams will each send a runner to the NCAA Division III National Championships.

The field of athletes for the national event was announced Sunday, Nov. 11. Senior Jacob Hedrick (Memphis, Ind.) became the first men's runner in program history to qualify for the national championships, while freshman Arig Tong (Columbus, Ind.) is the first women's runner since Emily Cochard in 2007 and the fourth woman in program history to make the final cut. The two runners are the first national qualifiers during the Brady Wells era, who is in his second season at the helm of his alma mater.

Hedrick qualified as one of seven at-large men's runners from the Great Lakes region. The senior placed 18th overall this past Saturday at the regional meet with a season-best eight-kilometer time of 25:46.0. Hedrick, the lone Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference national qualifier on the men's side, won the league meet as well with a time of 25:59.0.

Tong, 2018 HCAC Freshman of the Year, improved her six-kilometer time by nearly 30 seconds from the conference meet to the regional race last Saturday. The freshman placed 13th overall at the Great Lakes Regional with a time of 22:12.8. Tong was second overall at the conference championships with a time of 22:42.1. She is the first freshman in school history to qualify for the national cross country championships and will be the lone female runner to represent the HCAC in 2018.

The NCAA Division III National Championships will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh this upcoming Saturday, Nov. 17. The women's race is slated for a 12:15 p.m. start, with the men to follow at 1:15 p.m. at Lake Breeze Golf Club.
