RHIT Selected by Coaches to Win HCAC Men’s Cross Country Champs

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's men's cross country team has been selected as the front runner to win the 2017 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. In a poll of the ten HCAC head coaches, the Engineers received 98 total points and eight first place votes.

Manchester University will strive for its seventh title, as the Spartans totaled 85 points and one first place vote.  Hanover College placed third in the poll with 81 points and the final first place vote, while Bluffton University finished fourth with 69 points.  Earlham College finished fifth with 53 points and was followed by Anderson University (52 points), Franklin College (51), Transylvania University (26), Defiance College (20), and Mount St. Joseph University (15).

Rose-Hulman finished second behind Manchester after a tiebreaker at the HCAC cross country championship last fall and returns two runners that earned first-team All-HCAC honors. Senior Alton Anspaugh (Shelbyville, Ind. / Shelbyville) finished in second place at last year's conference championship for the Engineers. Senior Matt Hill (Connersville, Ind. / Connersville) placed seventh overall at the conference meet last fall.  The Engineers also return two honorable mention honorees from last fall.  The returning runners will strive to pace the Rose-Hulman men's squad to a third cross country HCAC title in four years at the end of October.

The Spartans return one first-team All-HCAC from last season.  Senior Blake Harris (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Homestead) earned a ninth place finish in the conference meet last fall.  Manchester will look to reload this fall to earn the school's seventh conference title in nine years.

Hanover College returns two first-team All-HCAC member from last year's third place team. Junior Jacob Hedrick (Memphis, Ind. / Henryville) placed third at the 2016 meet, leading all Panthers at the event. Sophomore Hayden Veach (Shelbyville, Ind. / Southwestern) also earned first-team All-HCAC honors after placing 10th last fall at the conference championship.

The 2017 HCAC Men's Cross Country Championship will be hosted by Manchester University on Saturday, October 28.
