DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's and women's track and field team earned titles at the ninth annual Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships held at Defiance College on February 16. The Engineer men scored 199.5 points in the 17 events to hold off Hanover's 152 point effort to claim their ninth straight HCAC men's indoor track title. The Rose-Hulman women's track team earned their second straight indoor title with 163 points, holding off second place Hanover by 31.5 points.
The Rose-Hulman men had eight event winners at the championship meet. The Fightin' Engineers captured individual titles in the 60-meter, 200-meter, 800-meter, pole vault, shot put and weight throw. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology also claimed first place honors in the 800-meter and 1,600-meter relays at Saturday's meet. Senior Nick Palmer won the pole vault with a new conference record mark of 4.82 meters.
Earlham College tallied 57 points to place third and was followed by Manchester University (55.5 points), Bluffton University (45), Defiance College (41), Transylvania University (40), Franklin College (29), Mount St. Joseph University (26) and Anderson University (17).
The Rose-Hulman women's team claimed six victories in the 200-meter, 60-meter hurdles, long jump, triple jump and the 800-meter and 1,600 meter relay teams. Senior Lauren London reset her own conference record set two years ago in the long jump with a leap of 5.49 meters. London also set a new conference record in the triple jump with a 11.35 mark at the conference championship.
Bluffton's Tori Bowen joins the HCAC record list after taking first place in the women's pole vault with a new conference record mark of 3.62 meters.
Manchester University tallied 80 points to place third in the women's team standings and was followed by Earlham College (73 points), Transylvania University (58), Bluffton University (52), Mount St. Joseph University (33.5), Anderson University (28), Franklin College (21) and Defiance College (20).
