Transylvania's Calhoon and Joy-Brandon & Manchester's Gonzalez Claim Men's Soccer Top Honors

GREENWOOD, Ind. --- Transylvania University's Riley Calhoon (Lexington, Ky. / Dunbar) and Tyler Joy-Brandon (Lexington, Ky. / Dunbar) have been named the 2017 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer Offensive and Defensive Most Valuable Players. Calhoon and Joy-Brandon helped the Pioneers earn its 10th HCAC regular season title.

Calhoon led the conference this season with 32 total points.  The senior midfielder scored 15 goals and totaled 2 assists to lead the Pioneers scoring attack.  In conference matches, Calhoon led the league with eight goals and 18 points scored in nine matches. 

Joy-Brandon earned the Defensive MVP for the first time in his career for his efforts this fall.  The junior defensive mid anchored a defensive unit that allowed a conference-best three goals in nine conference matches.  The Transylvania defense also registered six shutouts in conference play and 12 shutouts overall this season.

Manchester University's Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind. / Portage) has been selected as the 2017 HCAC Freshman of the Year.  Gonzalez, a forward for the Spartans, contributed 14 total points in his first collegiate season. The freshman also totaled four goals and six assists for the Manchester men's soccer team this fall.

Transylvania University's Matt Vogel has been named the 2017 HCAC Coach of the Year, earning his first honor as the head man for the Pioneers. Vogel has led Transylvania to a 17-1 record this season, earning the school's tenth HCAC regular season crown.

Ten players join Calhoon, Joy-Brandon, and Gonzalez as First-Team All-HCAC members. Those players include: Hanover's Will Bridgeman, Thomas Doering, and Dominic Isadore; Rose-Hulman's Trevor Bednarek, Turner Perkins, Austin Webb, and Carter Wright; and Transylvania's Jacob Hill, Alex Shkraba, and Charlie Wend.

All teams are voted and selected by the 10 conference head coaches.
