Transylvania Selected to Win Fourth Straight HCAC Men’s Soccer Title

2013 Schedule

GREENWOOD, IN – Transylvania University’s men’s soccer team has been selected as the front runner to win the 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. The Pioneers received seven first-place votes and 95 total points in a poll of the conference’s ten head coaches, edging out Rose-Hulman.

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology will look to capture the school’s fourth HCAC men’s soccer title, as the Engineers totaled 91 points and two first place votes.  Anderson University placed third in the poll with 73 points.  Hanover College finished fourth with 68 points and the final first place vote and was followed by Franklin College (67 points), Earlham College (47), Manchester University (39), Defiance College (33), College of Mount St. Joseph (24), and Bluffton University (13).

Transylvania is coming off a 16-2-2 record in 2012.  The Pioneers claimed their eighth HCAC title last fall with an 8-0-1 record and earned a HCAC tournament title with a 4-1 win over Anderson.  Transy fell in the first round of the NCAA tournament at Wheaton 3-0.  TU led the HCAC in goals (49) and ranked second in the league in goals allowed (17) last season.

The Pioneers return a pair of First-Team All-HCAC selections from their 2012 team, including the HCAC Offensive Most Valuable Player.  Senior midfielder Kyle Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) was instrumental in leading the Pioneers’ top ranked offense last fall.  Smith led the conference with 18 goals and 40 points during the 2012 season to earn the MVP honor.  Senior back Taylor Ballard (Louisville, Ky./Manual) netted four goals a year ago and will look to anchor the defensive unit this fall.

Rose-Hulman shared the conference title with Transy last season with an 8-0-1 record (12-5-3 overall).  The Engineers ended the season with a 1-0 setback to Anderson in the HCAC tournament.  RHIT returns all six First-Team All-HCAC members from last season’s squad, including two-time HCAC Defensive MVP Mike Schiff (Martinsville, Ind./Mooresville).  Schiff led the Engineers’ defense that allowed only four goals in league play.  Junior goalkeeper Drew Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) returns in net for the Engineers after leading the HCAC in save percentage (.824) and shutouts (7) as a sophomore.  Offensively, senior forward Will Senat (Edmond, Okla./North) comes back to the lineup after netting 10 goals with three assists last fall.

Anderson University has been selected to finish third after a third place finish in 2012.  The Ravens finished the season 10-11-1 overall and 5-3-1 in league play.  AU returns two First-Team All-HCAC selections to the pitch this fall.  Senior forward Brad Rusche (New Palestine, Ind./H.S.) and senior back Reid Martin (Seymour, Ind./H.S.) will strive to lead the Ravens to a league title in 2013.  Rusche led Anderson with 10 goals and three assists a year ago, while Martin led the AU defense.

The 2013 men’s soccer season is set to begin on August 30.
