INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology leads the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball standings after finishing the first full week of conference action with a 2-0 record.
Rose-Hulman pitcher Clayton Mayfield tossed seven innings to help the Fightin' Engineers complete a doubleheader sweep over Manchester on Saturday. The junior struck out eight batters in seven innings of work, allowing just five hits and two runs in the victory. Mayfield also added three fielding assists by keeping the ball low in the strike zone for much of the outing.
Pioneer Jake Schmidt went a season-high 6.2 innings on the mound as he gained a no-decision in Transylvania's game one 6-2 loss to Defiance. The sophomore tallied a season-best seven strikeouts (9.45 K/9 average for the week) and only allowed one hit against four walks. At the time Schmidt left the mound, the Pioneers held a 2-0 lead against Defiance.
Catcher Ben Bucklew led the Defiance Yellow Jackets to a 3-1 overall week, including a sweep of Transylvania. The junior went 7-for-14 at the plate with three RBI and a .786 slugging percentage. Bucklew also added a perfect 3-for-3 stolen bases with a 1.000 fielding percentage.
In four games for the Ravens last week, Joe Moran went 9-for-15 at the plate with two doubles and two home runs. The junior first baseman added seven RBI with a .600 batting average and 1.133 slugging percentage for the week. In game one against Manchester, Moran delivered two home runs and connected on a go-ahead three-run double in game two against Mount St. Joseph last week.
