INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- Transylvania University leads the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball standings after going undefeated in conference play last week.
Sophomore Hudson Chastain hit in all four opening games of HCAC play in leading the Pioneers to a 4-0 start in conference play. The sophomore hit .625 at the plate for the week with 8 RBI as the Pioneers swept Earlham, 4-1 and 17-6 on Tuesday, and Franklin, 7-4 and 10-7 on Sunday. In a 17-6 win against Earlham, Chastain went 4-for-5 with 3 doubles and 3 RBI while also drawing a walk.
In Sunday's 10-7 game two win against Franklin, the sophomore delivered 4 RBI to go with a double in another 4-for-5 game at the plate. For the week, Chastain went 10-for-16 at bat with three walks and three stolen bases while posting an on-base percentage of .684 and slugging percentage of .875. The sophomore now leads the conference in RBI (23) and ranks third in batting average (.430).
Transylvania's Collin Johnson started in the conference-opening 4-1 win against Earlham College last Tuesday for the Pioneers en route to a 4-0 start in conference play. The junior made his sixth appearance of the 2019 campaign and matched a season-high six innings of work for a no-decision. Johnson scattered six hits over the first six innings and registered a season-high five strikeouts in the win while allowing just one earned-run over that span.
The junior now leads the HCAC in innings pitched and still has yet to allow a walk this season, Johnson is tied for 1st in the country along with 13 other remaining pitchers in that category.
Mount St. Joseph defeated Capital last week in an 8-4 decision. The Lions were led by third basemen Roman Rothwell who went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs and four RBI in the victory.
