Earlham's Nate Lynch Named HCAC Baseball Most Valuable Player

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Earlham College's Nate Lynch (Oxford, Ohio / Talawanda) has been named the 2017 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player in baseball.  The All-HCAC squad is selected by a vote of the ten conference head coaches. The senior outfielder guided the Quakers to a 29-12 overall record, and the HCAC regular season and tournament title this spring.

Lynch hit .426 (52-for-122) in conference play and had 35 runs, 21 RBI, three doubles, four triples, one home run and 32 stolen bases.  The senior had a .541 slugging percentage and a .474 on-base percentage during league contests. 

Earlham's Howie Smith (Hamilton, Ohio / Talawanda) has been selected as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year. Smith, a senior pitcher for the Quakers, finished the HCAC season with a 6-2 record on the mound.  The senior posted an ERA of 2.04 and struck out 50 batters in 61.2 innings of work.  

Manchester University's Joe Gallatin (Muncie, Ind. / Muncie Central) has been selected as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year. Gallatin, a catcher and outfielder for the Spartans, had a .345 batting average in league play this spring. He led the HCAC with 35 runs batted in, and five home runs and a .513 slugging percentage. Manchester finished the season 22-21 overall.

The HCAC has also awarded the 2017 Coach of the Year award to Earlham Head Coach Steve Sakosits. Sakosits guided the Quakers to a 29-12 record and finished the season first in the conference with a 21-6 league record.  He also helped guide Earlham to its first conference tournament title and berth into the NCAA Tournament. It is the first HCAC Coach of the Year honor for Sakosits at Earlham.
