Baseball Report (Week 8) - Manchester Moves Three Games Clear of HCAC Field

GREENWOOD, IN - Manchester University took control of the HCAC championship race following last week's play.  The Spartans (20-11, 14-4 HCAC) went 3-1 during the week and currently lead Anderson and Rose-Hulman by three games in the race for the league crown with seven games remaining.

The Spartans dropped a game to Anderson and earned a three-game sweep of Mount St. Joseph on the road.

Manchester's Trevor Kimm (Anderson, Ind./H.S.) led the offense during the week. The junior shortstop finished 8-for-15 (.533) at the plate with nine runs scored, two doubles, a home run, and five RBI, while posting a slugging percentage of .867. 

Senior pitcher Dylan Padgett (Kirklin, Ind./Clinton Central) threw his second career shutout in a 9-0 win over Mount St. Joseph.  Padgett struck out a personal high 10 batters in the win.

Manchester is scheduled to face Defiance Tuesday and Earlham over the weekend.

In other HCAC action...

Franklin (19-13, 10-8 HCAC) went 3-1 on the week to improve its spot in the standings.  The Grizzlies beat Rose-Hulman 10-2 and took two out of three at Transylvania (15-16, 9-8 HCAC) over the weekend.  Senior pitcher Taylor Glaze (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic) earned a pair of victories during the week to lead FC. The senior lefty posted a 2-0 record and a 0.64 ERA in two appearances last week. Glaze tossed eight innings and allowed one run in a victory over Rose-Hulman Tuesday, scattering three hits with seven strikeouts.  The senior then threw six scoreless innings in a relief appearance as the Grizzlies earned a 9-5 win at Transylvania in 14 innings, striking out six batters with four hits allowed to earn the win.

Earlham (18-13, 10-8 HCAC) saw its win streak reach seven straight following a perfect 4-0 record last week.  The Quakers blanked Mount St. Joseph 1-0 and posted a three-game sweep of Rose-Hulman (17-12, 11-7 HCAC) in Terre Haute.  Senior designated hitter Ryan Hayes (New Lebanon, Ohio/Dixie) finished the week 6-for-13 with two runs scored, a double, a home run, and two RBI to lead the Quakers. 

Bluffton (16-14, 9-9 HCAC) continued its hot play with a 3-1 mark last week.  The Beavers beat rival Defiance on Wednesday and took two out of three against Anderson (18-11, 11-7 HCAC) over the weekend.  Junior Jeff Roth (Bellevue, Ohio/H.S.) led the offense going 10-for-17 (.588) at the plate with five RBI and two runs scored.

Hanover (11-16, 7-10 HCAC) claimed a three-game sweep of Defiance (8-23, 2-16 HCAC) over the weekend.  Senior right fielder Kolton Chapman (Lynnville, Ind./Tecumseh) batted .500 and reached base nine times to lead Hanover against the Jackets. Chapman was 5-for-10 at the plate with a home run, two doubles, and four walks. He scored four times during the series and knocked in two runs with a walk-off homer in the finale April 19.
