Baseball Report (Week 1) - Franklin Opens Season with 5-2 Mark

GREENWOOD, IN- The 2014 baseball season began last week as all ten institutions started their schedules.  Franklin kicked off the schedule in Florida and returned home for a doubleheader, finishing the span 5-2.  The Grizzlies earned wins over St. Joseph's, No. 21 Augustana, Concordia (MN), and a doubleheader sweep of Thomas More.

The Franklin (5-2, 0-0 HCAC) offense scored 49 runs during the week and currently leads the conference in hits (62), RBI (45), doubles (15), and triples (5).

Senior outfielder Scott Windler (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic) hit .435 with a sparkling .548 on-base percentage and .739 slugging percentage during the week for the Grizzlies.  Windler scored five runs and drove in five runs, while adding three doubles and two triples.

On the mound for Franklin, sophomore pitcher Hayden Cleveland (Brownsburg, Ind./Cardinal Ritter) tossed a pair of complete-game victories during the week.  The sophomore threw a seven-inning, complete-game shutout against Thomas More, striking out nine batters and allowing just two hits in the win. In a 7-3 win over No. 21 ranked Augustana, Cleveland had six strikeouts with one earned run. For the week, Cleveland recorded a 0.64 ERA and held opponents to a .137 batting average.

Franklin will welcome Albion for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday.
