Baseball Report (Week 8) - Anderson Moves Into 2nd Place After 8th Straight Win

GREENWOOD, IN - Anderson University moved into second place in the HCAC standings after a perfect week last week.  The Ravens (18-15, 12-6 HCAC) have won eight in a row after a 6-0 stretch this past week. 

AU snapped rival Manchester's 10-game win streak with a 7-6 10-inning win on Tuesday.  Sophomore Jacob Craft (LaPorte, Ind./H.S.) finished 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run, three runs scored, and two RBI in the win.

Anderson closed the week with a doubleheader sweep of Wabash and a three game sweep of Hanover (14-16, 7-10 HCAC).

Sophomore Cole Heberling (Anderson, Ind./H.S.) finished the five-game stretch 6-for-14 (.429) at the plate with two doubles, five runs scored, and eight RBI. 

Anderson will face Rose-Hulman Tuesday and Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati over the weekend.

In other HCAC action...

No. 9 Manchester (25-5-1, 15-3 HCAC) finished the week with a 2-2 mark, but still holds a three game cushion in the race for a conference title.  The Spartans bounced back from the loss to Anderson to take the series with Rose-Hulman (12-17, 9-7 HCAC) two games to one. Senior Austin Rieke (Fishers, Ind.) hit .533 at the plate with eight hits and two RBI to lead the black and gold. 

Defiance (17-10, 10-7 HCAC) moved into third place in the league standings with a 3-0 record last week.  The Jackets swept Earlham (7-25, 3-14 HCAC) to move up in the race for a conference tournament berth.  Junior outfielder Aaron Helland (Defiance, Ohio/H.S.) finished the series hitting .462 with five stolen bases, five runs scored, and three RBI.

Transylvania (16-14, 9-8 HCAC) earned a series win over Bluffton (18-14, 9-8 HCAC) by a 2-1 margin.  The Pioneers now hold the tiebreaker over the Beavers in the race for a HCAC tournament bid.  Transy pitcher Jamie King (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) pitched eight innings in a 5-1 win over Bluffton in the opener of the series. King struck out a career-high 11 Beavers and did not walk a batter.

Franklin (16-16, 8-9 HCAC) moved back to .500 on the season after taking two of three against Mount St. Joseph (7-21, 3-13 HCAC) over the weekend.  Freshman pitcher Hayden Cleveland (Indianapolis, Ind./Cardinal Ritter) broke the FC single game strikeout record in a 5-0 win over Mount St. Joseph Saturday. The freshman threw a two-hit shutout in the win, breaking the Franklin single game strikeout record with 15 punch outs in nine innings of work.
