Baseball Report (Week 5) - Anderson Sweeps Defiance; Moves to 5-1 in HCAC Play

GREENWOOD, IN - Anderson University went 3-0 last week, earning a series sweep of Defiance (8-7, 2-4 HCAC). The Ravens (9-8, 5-1 HCAC) sit alongside Manchester at the top of the HCAC standings.

AU kicked off the series with a 9-6 win over the Yellow Jackets Friday.  Sophomore designated hitter Jordan Ball (Anderson, Ind./H.S.) went 2-for-2 at the plate with a home run and four RBI. 

On Saturday, Anderson won the first game 10-7 and closed the doubleheader with a 6-0 triumph.  Sophomore Jacob Craft (LaPorte, Ind./H.S.) finished the two games 4-for-9 at the plate with five runs scored and one RBI.

In the 6-0 win, sophomore pitcher Jake Eaton (LaPorte, Ind./H.S.) tossed eight shutout inninngs, allowing five hits with two strikeouts.

Anderson will face IPFW in Indianapolis tonight.  The Ravens will welcome Manchester to campus Tuesday afternoon and have a three-game series with Transylvania over the weekend.

In other HCAC action...

No. 16 Manchester (15-3-1, 5-1 HCAC) remains in first place after a 2-1 series win over Transylvania (9-9, 3-3 HCAC).  Senior pitcher Kyle Konarski (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) tossed a complete game in a 2-1 Spartans win over Transylvania Saturday. The senior finished the afternoon with six strikeouts, while allowing one earned run and seven hits over nine innings of work. 

Hanover (11-8, 4-2 HCAC) earned a road sweep of Mount St. Joseph (4-13, 0-5 HCAC) in Cincinnati this past weekend.  The Panthers scored nine runs in each win.  Sophomore shortstop Ryan Johns (Cincinnati, Ohio) was 5-of-14 (.357) at the plate with two doubles, a triple, four runs scored, and six RBI to lead the HC offense during the sweep.

Bluffton (11-8, 3-3 HCAC) earned the school's first baseball series win over Rose-Hulman (6-11, 3-2 HCAC), taking two of three contests against the Engineers.  Kyle Niermann (Napoleon, Ohio/H.S.) led the Beavers at the plate, going 8-for-16 (.500) with two doubles, five runs scored, and one RBI.  The senior also became the second BU player to eclipse 200 career hits.

Franklin (8-9, 2-4 HCAC) pulled out a 2-1 series win over Earlham (6-14, 2-4 HCAC) Saturday.  The Grizzlies won the series thanks to a 10-9 11-inning win in the second contest Saturday.
