GREENWOOD, IN- The 2013 baseball season began last week as all ten institutions started their schedules. Manchester kicked off the week in South Carolina with a 4-0 mark, posting victories over Penn State-Harrisburg, Ursinus, and Manhattanville. The Spartans will close the trip with contests against Eastern and Catholic this afternoon.
The Manchester (4-0, 0-0 HCAC) offense scored 43 runs during the week and currently leads the conference in batting average (.384), doubles (11), triples (2), home runs (2), slugging percentage (.523), RBI (38), and on base percentage (.497).
Senior shortstop Cory Marchant (Fort Wayne, Ind.) hit .529 with a sparkling .636 on-base percentage during the week for MU. Marchant contributed five doubles and nine hits in the four contests. Marchant turned in a five-RBI outing in the 13-12 season-opening win over PSU-Harrisburg.
On the mound for Manchester, junior pitcher Dylan Padgett (Kirkland, Ind./Clinton Central) fired a complete-game in his first appearance this spring. Padgett tossed nine full innings, allowing only four hits and zero earned runs, as the Spartans defeated Ursinus 13-1. Padgett tallied eight strikeouts in the win and held the opposition to a .138 batting average.
Manchester will face DePauw in a pair of home-and-home doubleheaders this weekend after returning home from South Carolina.
