Rob & Claire Hewitt Named Earlham Co-Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coaches

RICHMOND, IN – Director of Athletics Mike Bergum announce the hiring of Claire and Rob Hewitt as Co-Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coaches on Thursday.

“The process of hiring a new cross country and track & field coach was a long tedious process, but the outcome was worth the wait,” Bergum said.  “Rob and Claire will be welcomed additions to the athletics department and Earlham College.  They bring a wealth of knowledge to the program and have been successful in developing student-athletes. I am thrilled for the future of cross country and track & field at Earlham.”

Rob Hewitt comes to Earlham from Germantown Friends High School in Philadelphia, Pa., where he has served as director of boys’ and girls’ cross country and track & field since 2014. Prior to being promoted to director, Rob was head boys’ cross country and indoor track & field coach as well as assistant outdoor track & field coach from 2004-13. He has also held positions as head girls’ track & field coach, head girls’ cross country coach, 10th grade team, and advisor at Germantown Friends.

A five-time Pennsylvania Independent Schools Cross Country Coach of the Year, Rob has led Germantown Friends to ten boys’ cross country state championships and five girls’ cross country state championships. His 2007 and 2009 boys’ teams finished top 15 nationally with the 2009 team qualifying for Nike Cross Country Nationals.

Rob has coached two state championship teams in track and field – girls in 2015 and boys in 2010. He has mentored 21 student-athletes to All-American recognition including 11 USATF Jr. National Qualifiers. In 2008, the Distance Medley Relay Team won the Championship of America.

A USATF Level Two certified coach, Rob graduated from Saint Joseph’s University in 2003. As a Hawk, he was a four-year letterwinner in cross country and track and field. He was a co-captain of a cross country team that finished second in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Claire comes to Earlham after serving at the University of Pennsylvania as director of operations and assistant distance coach for the Penn track & field teams. Before Penn, she spent six seasons as an assistant coach with Saint Joseph’s University cross country and track & field teams. While at Saint Joseph’s, she coached 32 All-Conference performance as well as an NCAA Regional qualifier.

Claire also spent time at the high school level including two years as head girls indoor and outdoor track coach at Germantown Friends as well as one year as head girls cross country and track & field coach at Friends Central.

A Penn alumnae, Claire was a four-year letterwinner for the Quakers. She is a three-time All-American and the school record holder in the steeplechase.

The Hewitt’s will begin their tenure at Earlham in early June.
